Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day)
Growing up I looked to My Granddad as a mighty warrior, who I loved to bits. He was part of the Canadian military and fought in the war ( wanted to join his brothers in the fight and lied about his age). I have only been told a few stories of his days during the War and none about what it was like on the front line, more about the ladies, the evening parties etc. But sitting and watching a few movies about the war, was when it really sank in as my Granddad watched, with a saddened look on his face. It wasn’t all glorious and he wasn’t the mighty warrior I grew up to believe. He lost friends and brothers in that War and I for a moment I wondered how hurt and afraid he must have felt getting all the tanks on to Normandy beach and the only way out was to move forward.
